Product Description

The High Power Wireless-N 600mW Smart Repeater expands the range of any 802.11b/g/n wireless network by repeating the signal from a wireless router and redistributing it in a new “extended” location. The SR10000 is equipped with advanced dual 600mW amplifiers and 5dBi detachable high gain antennas to extend Wi-Fi coverage by a staggering 10,000 sq ft. The Premium Series Smart Repeater features network bridging capabilities that allow additional networking devices, such PCs and network switches to attach to one of five (5) available wired network ports for network access. The Premium Series Smart Repeater works with all Wi-Fi networks and is simply the most powerful universal Wi-Fi range extender on the market.

5Amped R10000
By Dave
This review focuses on the R10000 rather than the SR10000. The difference is that one is a router, one operates as a repeater. Internally, I believe both to be essentially the same hardware.I have installed hundreds of routers for my satellite customers over the years, and am always looking for the best product I can find. Until just recently, I had settled on the Buffalo brand of router, as they are reliable, inexpensive, and very powerful when compared to off-the-shelf boxes from local retailers.By way of standards, the typical wifi router operates at about 32 milliwatts. The Buffalo runs at around 70+ milliwatts (depending on who you believe - some people say 250 milliwatts). And then the Amped appears on the market, supposedly running dual 600 milliwatt radios. This was too good to resist!!!I've tried everything under the sun. 2000 milliwatt amplifiers, 1000 milliwatt amplifiers, numerous types of dual-radio wifi repeaters, and every external antenna type known to man. My test environment has the client 200 feet away inside a metal camper trailer. I put the equipment to be tested upstairs in our 3-story house, inside a room with exterior siding and a window that faces the wrong way. This is a VERY difficult shot to say the least, but then add in a row of trees and you have to wonder how a signal makes it to the trailer at all.Rather than actual signal numbers, I'll just use Window's bars for this review. Since the focus is on wifi distance, I won't deal with CPU speed, available memory, or certain firmware features. Here are the results, you need to be sitting down!!! All routers were tested at exactly the same spot, using out of the box equipment.Linksys, Vikosmo, D-Link and Netgear: 1-2 bars, variable. Speeds usually 1-28 Mbps.Buffalo Hi-Power series: 2-3 bars, variable. Speeds sometimes 54 Mbps.Amped R10000: 5 bars, solid. Speeds nearly always 54 Mbps. There isn't any discussion here! The Amped product wins, hands down. For the purposes of the test, I disabled the "N" capability, making the Amped router act more like the other routers tested. Under ideal conditions, the Amped router could run under the "N" standard and still deliver a whopping signal. From our main floor, there is a Buffalo hi-power router directly below the floor. On the 3rd story, there is the Amped. Sitting in the living room, less than 10 feet away from the Buffalo, the signal from the Amped on the 3rd floor is equal!!! In the trailer, 200 feet away, the downstairs Buffalo is sometimes visible but never usable, the outside repeater in the garage is often visible, sometimes usable. The Amped is ALWAYS solid and eliminated the need for a 200 foot underground run of ethernet cable.I'm an old professional, and have operated commercial broadcast TV stations. I'm also FCC licensed to service radar systems, and I'm a ham operator as well. So when I read a warning to "Connect the antennas BEFORE you power up the router" I instinctively know that the device is probably going to perform to spec. A warning like that tells me that the device might actually destroy itself if the proper antennas aren't connected. Believe it or not, this is a GOOD sign!I've had the Amped router running under a stress test for 2 weeks now, and it is still calm, cool and collected. It runs slightly warm, but not hot, and it hasn't glitched or self rebooted.I used to use a repeater in our garage, to service my wifi (in my pocket) email as well as provide weather updates to my airplane. After trying the Amped router, the repeater has been retired - it is redundant now! I love this thing!!!Dave.

5My Whole House Had Strong Wireless 10 Minutes After Opening the Box
By J. Philip Faranda
Our office in the basement is where our modem/router is, so the signal on the second floor of the house is weak and spotty. This device now has a strong signal all over the house, even on the second floor.Setup was actually quite simple- 10 minutes tops. You hook the device to a computer with 70% signal from the main router in the house, set up your passcodes, and then disconnect after a few clicks. Then I put it on top of the kitchen hutch, quite out of view but positioned perfectly to broadcast to 4000 SF of living space evenly. 10 minutes later, everything that connected to Wifi- our laptops, tablet, even our smart phones had strong wifi signal everywhere and I was streaming Star Trek on Netflix in the master bedroom where I was lucky to get email before.Easy setup, no wires (you use a Cat-5 cable for setup and then you unplug and toss it in a drawer), strong signal everywhere, worked right out of the box- it is hard to find fault with that. If you are looking for an uncomplicated, true wireless solution for weak signal and dead spots in a house, this is a bullseye.

1Setup complications; buggy firmware disappoints
By Carl Kessler
If you've read all the glowing reviews, you'll probably think the SR10000 sets up easily and works like a champ. My experience is quite the opposite, and the details might be helpful to those who go ahead and buy this device in spite of its issues.1. Setup with the wizard seems simple and concludes with a countdown screen; in 150 seconds you'll reboot with a refreshed view in your browser window. Not for me; never refreshed (tried both Chrome and Safari, both on Mac).2. Try to reach the control screen on the browser after setup: not as easy as it might seem. The SR10000 is setup to be addressed at 192.168.1.240 or at setup.ampedwireless.com. Once you've set it up with the wizard, however, the 192.168.1.240 IP address is unlikely to be correct, because the device will have been set to whatever IP address was assigned by your original wireless router. Unfortunately, the device defaults to redirecting from the 240 IP address to the setup text string "setup dot ampedwireless dot com" (setupampedwirelesscom) which won't resolve because that is in fact the 240 IP address. - Looking at your original wireless router control panel, you can see which IP address was assigned to the SR10000. Then, you can go to that IP address by entering it as a URL in your browser. For example, 192.168.1.38. Unfortunately, in my case, when I did that I connected to the device just long enough for it to redirect the browser back to setup.ampedwireless.com, which itself couldn't be resolved! - Tech support had me unplug the device for 2 minutes and try again. On the second of these attempts, I was actually able to connect to the control panel.3. How to get around this wackiness of IP addresses and URL redirection? There's a setting, once you finally get to the SR10000 control page, to use a static IP address, as well as to shut off auto redirection.4. So now we're finally at the control panel. Now what I really want is to set the SR10000 channel to Auto. Why? By default, the channel is static. If you're like most folks, I suspect your original wireless router is set to auto, and might periodically have a different channel than what it does right now -- such as after a power failure reboot, for example. The official advice from Amped's tech support is to just go in to the SR10000 control panel and reset the channel after such events. They told me that yes, most folks think that is a needless pain in the butt. - The device has a setting of "Auto" on the channel choices, but it doesn't work. The latest firmware update (as of today) claims to fix this problem, by enabling the "Auto" setting to work, yea! But, in my experience, it doesn't. So I asked tech support about it; they say to not use Auto on the SR10000 even after the firmware update because they say "the bugs are still being worked out." In other words, a failed firmware update to a failed item in config settings.5. If, like me, you have a dual band router (2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz), the advice from Amped Wireless tech support is to disable the 5GHz in order to ensure the SR10000 works well. That's not ideal; there's real value in the 5 GHz network for that part of my house that won't be extended. Plus, it makes no sense to me: the SR10000 only transmits / receives on 2.4 GHz so it shouldn't know or care if I have a dual network or not. It should just amplify the 2.4 GHz signal.6. This is my second SR10000. I had a suite of problems, similar but slightly different, on the first one. When I explained them to tech support, their advice was that it probably was a bad memory chip and that I should return the device through Amazon and try again. As usual, Amazon is a pleasure to deal with and made that go very smoothly. Why was my setup experience so different than all the positive reviewers'? Perhaps because I wanted auto channel, wanted to go back in after the setup wizard to configure things like 40Mhz (faster) instead of the default 20Mhz, etc. Maybe because my original wireless router, which I'd hoped to use this to extend, is an Asus RT-N56U and perhaps the Amped Wireless device just works oddly with it. Or maybe because I'm using a MacBook.I returned the SR10000 and will find another firm's device to extend my wireless network. To net it out: the idea of configuring channel on power outages is annoying (admittedly I live in a rural area where this isn't uncommon); the idea of buggy firmware updates and config features that plain don't work makes me doubt the company on all their technology; the sheer pain of setup. Nothing about this device impressed me one bit, but there was plenty to give me a negative view.
