from 5th fl to the backyard -- in a NYC apartment -- I now have 4 "bars" on the Ipad wifi. Attached antenna with the provided hardware to the child-proof gear on the window frame. Guide the cable trough the air-co inlet.Via a separately bought cable I have connected it to my Fios router.

Just a note that the spec sheet on the Engenius site lists 60 degrees vertical beamwidth, but it is not correct. It is around 18 degrees according to the radiation graph, which is in the range you'd expect for a 8dbi omni. Not saying this is a problem, but it makes a big difference when planning out your implementation, so FYI. Still a good price on a well made antenna, just not going to be suitable in situations where 60degree vertical is needed, which is pretty much impossible with a 8dbi omni.You should review the radiation pattern of any antenna anyway, as two with identical specs (including beamwidth) can be extremely different, since the specs only look at the main lobe.

This antenna screams quality. The mounting hardware and overall stout nature of this product make it a joy to work with. I incurred a significant increase in signal QUALITY with this antenna. The range of the network did not drastically increase and that was the idea--in fact I was sold by the fact this antenna has a 60 degree Vertical Beamwidth which means that you get maximum signal quality a mere 20 feet from the antenna out to it's maximum range (which will exceeed the range of your laptop being able to transmit back....). This is based upon a 11 foot mounting height, outside, measured from the ground to midpoint on the antenna. A on-line dBi calculator was used to determine where the lower 3 dBi lobe would hit ground and it figured to 20 feet away at 11 feet mounting height and 8 dBi with 60 degrees V. Many high gain antennas have a 15 degree or 25 degree Vertical Beamwidth which if plugged into the same calculator will show you 87 to 123 feet from the antenna is where the lower 3 dBi lobe will hit ground. This assumes all other factors are equal. A 12 dBi antenna with a 8 degree V beamwidth won't give you a stronger signal than what you are used to seeing until 237 feet away from the antenna. It sounds cool to have a higher gain antenna but I can tell you that as you increase gain you narrow your beamwidth and it makes the antenna LESS USEFUL in many situations, especially when you are trying to reduce dead spots or get around troublesome issues such as a wireless network install at a motel where the rooms are separated by cinder block walls and cinder block outside walls, and finally metal siding just to add misery to the pain. That is exactly what this antenna was used for. Also, this antenna is small and unobtrusive enough to use indoors as well. Make sure you use VERY HIGH QUALITY LMR400 type cable, as I did. I used 3 foot lengths from AIR802 direct to the antenna from my Engenious 200 watt AP (EOC 1650). This cable resulted in a max dBi loss of about .01 dBi, which means I got basically ALL of the antenna's 8 dBi capability. Also, since the antenna did not have a metal cap on top, and is so small that I did not feel a need to introduce a lightning protector into the mix--which can REALLY result in a dBi loss but if you have to use one you have to use one and that is better than having a lightning strike fry all of your equipment. Not in this case, though. The antenna is hardly the highest object on the roof (actually it is mounted on the eave) and there is quite a bit of metal up there anyway that would be a tastier target for lightning.
