4How to Optimize Your Belkin Dual Band Range Extender
By Sonny Craven
It is easy to run into problems with the Belkin range extender right out of the box..but once you understand what to do, it works well.I have a single band Belkin N router but unlike an older pre-N Belkin (which I love, but donated to a friend when I upgraded) that reached every room of a two level home, even on the pool deck, this one won't reach outside or the garage of a new one-level home. So, I bought the Belkin dual band range extender with the high hope it would cure the problem. My wife likes to sit on the the porch or in back by the pool and use her iPad2. I like to use my wireless cell phone from either area.First let me say, I have had Belkin products for many years, with very successful performance. I like the fact Belkin provides 24/7 support for it's products, and even better, it stands behind it's products. I had two USB hubs of the same model burn out after some use and Belkin replaced them at no cost, no hassle.Right out of the box, the range extender instructions are simple and forthright. It requires that you connect the extender via an Ethernet cable to your PC Ethernet port (the cable is included in the box...nice touch, Belkin) and follow very simple steps. The included software wasn't prompted or needed with Win7, and setup creates an additional channel as well, and you simply disconnect from your PC and place the extender somewhere in your home where you need a stronger wireless signal and it searches for an acceptable signal from your main router connected to your PC and modem. Be sure your extended router is receiving a signal strong enough to lock onto the signal from your main router. You'll know this after a few moments as the extended router goes through a protocol to find and lock on to the main router signal, indicated by a steady blue light. If the light blinks intermittently or is yellow, move the extended router until the light does become blue.In my case, I experienced initial problems because I could not receive a signal strong enough to connect to the Internet on my nearby porch, less than 20 feet from the extended router. Further, if I moved a wireless device 15 feet or more in certain directions in the same room or other rooms, the signal became weak or unusable. At that point, I was ready to take it back. Remembering that a firmware upgrade is available online at Belkin, I followed the steps and, lo and behold, I had a stronger signal everywhere. I became a happy camper.Issue two was just a little more complicated. A light that had always glowed steady on my main router before adding the extender now blinked yellow every 10 seconds or so, indicating the "handshake" between router and extended router was shaky at best. As I have my VOIP connected cordless phone base near the main router, I was suspicious it was causing interference with the 5MHZ band shared with the extended router. A call to Belkin provide the answer. In the setup, I only had to change the setting from channel 6 to channel 11. If you don't know how to access your router, let Belkin guide you. Trust me, it's worth the time..and there is little if any waiting on hold. So, bottom line? These routers are simpler to hook up than ever, but they still aren't always intuitive. But, Belkin makes troubleshooting easier with 24 hour tech support and the fixes are rather simple. And, remember, right out of the box, after you set up the extended router, and while you are connected to your PC, please upgrade the firmware, and later, check-back to see if there other upgrades down the road. It's worth it, trust me. Be sure to move the extended router around to get a good signal, and if there are problems syncing with the main router due to other wireless devices or PC-connected phones in your home, call Belkin and ask them to help you change the main router channel number.Lastly, there is an Android app that serves an a WiFi analyzer and it shows the signal strength of the dual bands, very helpful as you try to find the optimal place to locate your range extender. Good luck.

2Range Limited & Disconnects
By SanjeevP
What sets this Wi-Fi range extender apart from other ones is the ability to extend both 2.4 and 5 GHz band Wi-Fi networks and it does that as claimed; and it works with all three 802.11 a. b. g and the n standards. 5 GHz has a much shorter range in distance and so is the extension for this band, barely 15 feet or so. 2.4 GHz extension is about 20 feet or thereabouts in my house, but it can vary depending upon the walls and other devices using 2.4 GHz band in your house. I have used it for only a short amount of time and have not experienced the disconnection problems other users are reporting. The 2 page manual can be a little more clear in stating that you should disconnect the computer from the W-Fi network before connecting this range extender to the ethernet port of your computer for set up. Otherwise the unit is easy to set up and is not bad looking. As of December 2011, the user guide is not available for download from Belkin web site. These are the steps;1. Connect Belkin range extender to the power outlet and ethernet port of computer.2. Disconnect computer from W-Fi network.3. In browser go to [...]4. Select the networks you want the extend the range of, one at a time.5. Put in the passwords for your Wi-Fi network.5. Voilà - you have a new extended network with _et added to the original Wi-Fi network name.6. Now you can move this range extender to anywhere within the range of original network signal and the signal is extended.Four ethernet ports make it useful to use near the media center where multiple devices like TiVO, new wireless DVD players etc. can be hooked up. So in a way this device functions as a wireless network switch.UPDATE (march 2012): after 2 months of use, the Wi-Fi connection with the router started disconnecting every couple of weeks or so and then you have to go over the whole set up of connection all over again. Don't buy.

5I Love Technology that WORKS WELL
By John N. Schear
With gadgets galore surrounding our everyday lives we are often confronted with those that just will not work and it is usually because of operator error. But, and that is one real big but, when I hooked up the Belkin Dual Band Range Extender I was oh so pleasantly surprised. It worked and worked exactly as it should have. When the instructions say do this and do that and then hit go it was all go from the beginning. I took it to my "man cave" (that's code for garage) and used it as my midpoint to see if the weak signal from the router would give it some additional range. It did and with ease. The first time I tried to extend my laptop and Duo into the garage without the Belkin I got a medium to no signal but with Belkin it was go at the gitgo. I took the laptop to a next door neighbor's house and it still worked. Now I have my own neighborhood network. If you saw where I lived you would laugh at that. There are still more cattle than people in the neighborhood and most of them do not need a network as long as they can hear the dinner bell. Regardless, this is one fine piece of equipment and I highly recommend it.
