I had this product completely setup within about 1 minute seriously.High speed wireless stable connection 24/7 since I setup the r36The latest firmware is already installed.Didn't need to install anything onto my laptop.Below are instructions for repeating a signal from a neighbor for example.1. Just plug the awus036h into the r362. Wirelessly log onto 192.168.2.13. Click "easy setup"4. Click "usb wireless adapter"5. Click "site survey"6. Click "rescan"7. Click on the "ssid" signal you want.8. Click "select"9. Click "next"10. Click "done" or you can click the "ssid choice" box, and rename it, and click "done"(You are DONE) The above instructions are as simple as I could make it.Security can be added at anytime by clicking on "advanced" and then clicking on "security"Adding security is almost identical on basically any brand of router.Look on youtube on how to add security to a router or call customer service.

I have 2 of these and installed the newest (spring 2012) firmware. These now work great with the AWUS036NHR To get N speed from the extender. The firmware is available through the ALFA web site.

I'm a full-time RVer, so I bought the Alfa AWUS036NHR along with Alfa R36 router in order to improve my wifi connectivity/speed, and to also establish my own private network (with Mac Address filtering) from a public wifi access. And, since a lot of people might be considering using both together, I'll review them together.As the reviews on the AWUS036NHR and the R36 seem to be hit or miss (because of misunderstanding their perceived performance), I thought I'd share a bit of information with the general consumer that may be in the market for such a device. A lot of people think "the more bars, the better". And, while that is true in a sense, there is a lot more to wifi signals than bars. Wifi is using two radios that emit the same frequencies in order to establish a connection to each other for information (packets) to travel upon to and from. And, just like a road, if there is a gap or bad spot between two points, items traveling along that road will be slowed down or stopped.In that frequency, there are three important factors of speed:(1) "Ping Rate" - How fast peripherals in a network contact each other.(2) "Download" - How fast data is brought in.(3) "Upload" - How fast data is sent out.And, again, just like a road, the wider it is (frequency bandwidth), the more that can travel on it. The bars one sees, only tells them how good of a connection they have with the access point/router, but it gives no information on the rate of data speed. For an indication of how good your wifi connection really is, one needs to do some tests at a site such as [...]Anyway, back to the point at hand... So, I received the AWUS036NHR and the R36. I really wanted to spend some time testing the AWUS036NHR on its own as just a usb network adapter (without going through the R36 router), and run some before and after tests. Prior to connecting the AWUS036NHR, I ran some tests (at [...]), connecting to a b/g router (200yds away with nothing obstructing between) with my stock b/g laptop card. I ran 5 tests using the same server (late at night with no one on the network), and I got a ping rate average of 18.0ms, a download average of 3.936Mbps, and an average upload speed of 1.084Mbps. I then connected the Alfa AWUS036NHR (with standard 5dbi antenna), and ran the same 5 tests on the same server. With the Alfa AWUS036NHR connected, I got a ping rate average of 19.6ms, a download average of 5.10Mbps, and an average upload speed of 3.816Mbps. The ping rate was a little slower on the alfa, but nothing that is worth worrying about. And, while the download and upload speed differences don't seem like a lot, in terms of data rates it is a sizable difference...especially with the upload being almost 3x as fast. All of this, of course, is all subjective to many things, but it's about as conclusive as it's going to get without using absolutely controlled testing equipment.Anyway... I then did a firmware update on the R36 so it would accept the AWUS036NHR. I then configured the R36 with my SSID/Password and Mac Addresses. Afterwhich, I connected the AWUS036NHR to the R36, and then connected the R36 to my laptop via ethernet cable. I ran the same 5 tests again with the same server, and received results comparable to just the AWUS036NHR alone. I also wirelessly connected my WDTV Live box to my R36/AWUS036NHR combo, and was flawlessly streaming movies from Netflix, HuluPlus, and HD movies from my shared folders on my laptop. Neither have dropped a single connection either, so they're both very dependable in that aspect.With all of this said, there are a lot of other intricacies in wifi performance. Not only how well the wireless card connects to the router/AP (bars) and how fast data is sent (Mbps), but how much data (packets) are dropped in the transfer on that connection and how many other wireless devices in the area are using the same frequency that causes interference. I'll save those (that are still reading) the jive on that, because I still find that the Alfa equipment still exceeds MY laptop's wireless card. From my perspective, the R36 and the AWUS036NHR were well worth the money spent for my needs. I needed something compact that would perform the tasks they're designed to. I find both do just that really well. Your mileage, as always, may vary.
