I bought this on special to replace a HWREN1. I'm glad I did for the improved features, seemless roaming and substantially improved signal strength. I only wish it had slots for wall mounting, but there are work arounds for that.

I am writing this review after receiving a replacement unit from Hawking Technologies. The first unit worked for a couple of weeks until it started dropping the signal randomly. Eventually, it got to a point where, when it did work, it was at a significant decrease in speed. I emailed Hawking about a firmware update, but they said there wasn't one. So, I went ahead with the RMA of the device. Upon receiving my second unit, everything worked fine for the first couple of weeks. Now, the same thing is occurring. I understand that I shouldn't be getting the full signal that the router would provide at close range, but when this extender does work, the speed difference is vast. I just tested my router at a moderate distance. I got 20mb download and 6mb upload. With the extender, both speeds are hovering around 1. Again, the thing works sporadically to begin with. I consider myself pretty tech savvy and have tried rebooting and reprogramming the device in order to fix it. However, nothing has seemed to fix the problem, so I guess it comes down to the fact that this extender is not a quality device. I advise everyone to stay away from it.
