Works well but instructions are poor.

I installed the repeater in an unattached garage. I was concerned at first because the signal strength LED was amber rather than green thereby indicating that the repeater was receiving a less than optimal signal from the base. The signal must be sufficient because the coverage area was greatly increased. It is easy for me to believe the claim that the effective transmission distance doubled.As another reviewer mentioned, the instructions are inadequate. I must agree. The instructions state that the repeater must be registered with the base but give no clue as to how to do so. The links to Panasonic's support do not lead to anything that I found to be helpful. The user's manual that came with the cordless phone system describes how to register additional handsets but does not mention the repeater other than to say it must also be registered. To spare others the minor head scratching I went through, here's the way to register the repeater. I recommend that users perform the following steps while the repeater is near the base so that successful registration can be more easily verified.With the repeater connected to its power block plugged into an outlet, find the tiny square button on the back of the repeater. It's below the word 'Program.' (The instructions do not mention the Program button at all! ) Press the button. The two LEDs on the repeater will flash red continuously.At the base, press the 'Locate' for five seconds and release it. Then press it briefly once. Next, press the 'Locate' button again for five seconds and then press it briefly once again.The two LEDs should now show solid green indicating that registration was successful.After the process has been completed, the registered repeater may be relocated to the desired area. If the lower LED remains red, you will have to find another place to put the repeater. A location where the LED is green would be best but mine worked well when it was amber.I took away one rating star because of the poor instructions.

We just bought and installed one of these, for use with a KX-TG6544B cordless phone system. The environment is an old wood-frame house, with a detached garage. The base is in the house, in a room facing the garage. About 30 to 40 feet between the base and the garage. Handsets would work in the garage, but got a little sketchy at the far end, and would go out completely on the other side of the garage (with the garage between base and handset).We installed the KX-TGA405B extender/repeater inside the garage, on the ceiling -- plugged it into the same outlet that a garage door opener was plugged into. It made a huge difference. Coverage in and behind the garage is now rock-solid. We can go at least another 80 feet vs what we could before.The extender has two indicators. "STATUS" lights steady green when ready, flashes green when in use, and lights red for trouble. The antenna/signal indicator lights steady green when close to base, amber when further away, and red when out-of-range. I found the signal strength dropped to amber from green almost immediately, but even with the unit quite a bit further away, it would still work. So don't worry if it shows amber. Indeed, I'd guess that the best place to position an extender is right after it transitions from green to amber -- just when the base signal starts to get weaker.It came with two different instruction sheets. One was worthless, the other pretty good. I think Panasonic must have issued an improved instruction sheet at some point. For whatever reason, Panasonic doesn't seem to have the instructions posted on their website, but if you contact tech support they will email you a PDF.These instructions say to register an extender to the base: Start with extender next to base, and unplugged. Press and hold LOCATOR on the base unit for 5 seconds. When we did that, something beeped, and the handset LCD showed "Base in registration". Then plug in the extender. It should register automatically. (The PROGRAM button on the extender is reportedly only used to DE-register it. You power the extender on while holding down PROGRAM.)

Great improvement

I purchased the Panasonic Repeater for my Panasonic KX-TG6545B cordless phone system after finding the coverage without the repeater to be somewhat lacking.Installation was easy. You push "Locate" on the phone base unit, plug in the repeater, and within 30 seconds, everything's set. From there, I found a place on the opposite side of my home where the repeater added the greatest improvement. Now, I can use my phone anywhere in my home from basement to attic, and even outdoors down to my mailbox (which is about 300' from my front door). This is easily the best coverage I've ever seen in a wireless product, and for the cost, is definitely worthwhile.

this adapter outshines linksys adapters by leaps and bounds goes from 2 bars to a minimum of 4 often hitting 5bars well worth the money this is my 4th one i bought for all the systems in my house . a must have for long distance wireless connections .4 bars through 2 walls and 200 ft away. would recommend this in a flash

Excellent Ad-Hoc Wireless Router/Transmitter For Windows XP SP3

After reading about this product for quite a while, I decided to go with this version with out the 9dbi antenna as it was reported to be a disappointment and not an improvement over the 5dbi one. The package arrived on time as advertised. The device+antenna are pretty light and well constructed. I bought a separate 10ft mini-USB/male USB cable to plug the device into my computer so that I could place the device outside of the room.I installed the driver/utility on the included mini disc without incident except for the fact that the final part of the installation kept freezing the first time around but was successful the second time w/o uninstalling before trying again. The utility is excellent because it allows you to easily set the parameters of the device.Running XP SP3 I had intended to use this device as an ad-hoc wireless router. However, this can not be done successfully via the control panel+Network Connections. Instead the utility must be used. This is not a problem as the program runs in the background w/ a tray icon for easy accessibility.The range on this product is excellent. I have a large old house with winding hallways/rooms making for redundant walls that could interfere with signal strength. However I can confidently say that the entire house and beyond is covered, upstairs and down (the device is in the upstairs hallway).However if you are using an iPhone (as I am) or other similar receiving device, the limited power of the phone's antenna prevents utilization of the ALFA's capabilities in terms of maximum range. Another issue I'd like to note is that you will not be able to connect multiple devices simultaneously using WPA2-PSK w/ AES encryption. I do not have knowledge of why this is. Switching to WPA-PSK w/ AES solves this problem.Overall, this is an excellent product that is easy to configure. You might not be able to surf the web at the edge of your yard due to the limitations of your receiving device, but your house will be saturated with a strong signal giving whatever wifi device you have all the help it can get.Highly recommended as an ad-hoc router! In reference to its abilities in terms of a plain old wifi antenna I can't comment as I am not using it for this purpose. But it's a safe bet that the device is similarly proficient in this area.

In love with this thing !!

I bought the Alfa AWUS036H after reading all the great reviews. I LOVE this wifi adapter. Works in all types of operating systems. All the drivers are online at the Realtek website. I had to download it for Windows 7 x64 because the CD did not have it (this was not a big deal at all). I prefer to download drivers from websites since they are always up to date. I used to pick up only 2 access points with my Belkin N USB adapter...this thing picks up over 10 !!! On top of that...they are almost all 4-5 bars. Best purchase I have ever made.

The new WL400 allows boat owners to connect to wi-fi hot spots so that their on board PC?s or equipment can connect to the internet. With internet connectivity on board you can download the latest weather or chart updates as well as having a mobile office on board. Most harbours and ports have either free or subscription based services available

The all-in-one system features a 200mW booster/modem encapsulated in the base of a hi-gain (12dBm) antenna with a 5m (16ft) USB cable. The antenna measures 1m (3ft) and has an industry standard 1? x 14TPI mountings.

The WL400 connects to an on board PC through a regular USB connection with a plug ?n? play driver disk supplied for Windows XP/Vista/7, Mac OS X 10.3 (and higher) and LINUX* operating systems. It supports 802.11b/g protocols as well as WEP and WPA encryption.

Even if your system already has wi-fi access, this can be disabled and you can take advantage of the superior range (and speed) that this system will offer.

Wi-Fi range depends on many local factors but Digital Yacht have seen ranges of up to 3-4 miles with this low cost system. In general, using an internal wi-fi adaptor typically found on a notebook, you?ll be lucky to find the signal at the end of the dock so if you plan to access the internet whilst on board the WL400 could be the solution for you.

Product Description

This is an 802.11n wireless USB adapter with a maximum output power of 1 watt (that's 1000 mW). This is a single band (2.4 GHz) 1T1R 802.11n adapter with maximum transfer speeds of 150 megabits per second (mbps). This is for one brand new (in retail box) AWUS036NEH wireless adapter with 5 dBi gain antenna. Also included in the retail box is the installation software on CD.

It is perfect for netbooks, laptops, and desktops. Important Driver Installation:
If you get an error while Installing the Drivers press OK, then Exit. Then do the following:

Right-click on your CD Drive and select Explore
For Windows, double-Click on the application file in this folder (the file name atarts with "IS_AP_STA_RT2870......) then follow the installation instructions.
For Mac and Linux open their folder and then run the application.

Or you can got to the manufactures website, then click on "Support" and on the left side click on "Divers" and download.

Excellent performance, great value

First, the con. It is unwieldy for a dongle. You really benefit from a USB extension cable if you are using this with a laptop.Now, the pros.Excellent performance. I installed drivers only (no utility) and let windows manage the device. I get far superior performance two stories up from my basement router than I did with my netbook's built in card. Superb reception as confirmed by a Windows "excellent" five bars vs. two previously, and my DD-WRT router's connection ratings (40 percent vs 17 percent).As a huge added bonus for power users, it has a replaceable antenna and is ready for your homemade cantenna or a commercial upgrade.A great value and it runs nice and cool for its power. If you can live with the clunky size, buy it. It is a great mobile adaptor you can easily shift to other PC's and antennas. Though the included antenna works very well.The best USB network dongle of the 5 I have owned from Belkin, Netgear, Trendnet, and a generic Ralink. When I use inSSIDer or netstumbler, far more networks show up in range. I had issues streaming video on my home network and this solved the problem. It may not be 300M/S but it gives you a solid connection which is more important than rated speed.

The hardware itself works great. However, the installation CD comes with Alfa's own utility, RaUI.exe. Using this utility can cause major problems with your system. Basically, once installed, the utility ties up your system resources. It can use up to 90% of your CPU time constantly. This causes the CPU to overheat and shut your system down (power off) without warning. This can result in lost data in other open applications as well as presenting a serious risk to your CPU overheating and getting fried, which could be an expensive repair.Also, the CD which comes with it has some serious flaws. You can't exit the installation unless the CD is still in the CD drive you are installing it from. You can't even Ctrl-Alt_Del to access the System Manager and end the task unless the CD is still present.Furthermore, the Auto-Run function of the installation CD has a fatal error. You can't Auto-Run the CD. It will come up with a Windows error if you try to setup using the screen which is presented from an Auto-Run. You can install the driver ok without problems, but you can't install the utility from the screen which gives you that option. You have to open the CD with explorer and click on the setup to run the setup without getting an error.If you install the utility on the CD your PC will later crash due to the overheating of the CPU. This problem doesn't appear at first, but only after you restart your computer and the utility RaUI.exe is initiated as part of the start-up. At that point it takes over your system resources and causes the 80%+ overhead on your CPU.My recommendation is that the hardware itself and it's drivers are very good, but the utility is dangerous. Just install the driver, but NOT the utility. Then use the Windows Wireless Network Wizard to install Windows' own utility. Once the drivers are installed, Window's own built in functions can use the hardware and provide all of it's functionality without the problems inherent in the RaUI.exe utility.The RaUI.exe utility is more user friendly and easier to setup and use than the Windows' built in wizard, but the serious flaw in how it uses so much of your system resources isn't worth the convenience.Again, the hardware itself, and it's drivers are very good. But the Alfa utility not only sucks, but poses a serious hazard to your system. Get someone who knows what they are doing to help you and install only the drivers from the provided CD but avoid the utility on the CD and use the Windows Wireless Setup Wizard instead to avoid serious problems which could lead to expensive repairs of your computer.

Doing the works, but not the magics

Use it on my brand new macbook pro. The mac 10.6 driver worked.It did improve the signal but only slightly better than the MBPbuild-in wireless.Next I tried it on an old PC laptop. It detected more andstronger signals than the PC laptop build-in.Pros:802.11n support, working Linux and SnowLeopard drivers, easy to carry.Cons:not supporting WPA2 enterprise protocol, plastic structure not very strong

Extremely long range wireless adapter

This is my second Alfa adapter, it is by far the most effective way I have found to connect a desktop computer to a wireless network.However, its performance is so good that it also makes a great supplementary adapter for laptops, allowing you to get a much stronger signal (transmit and receive) than with most laptop's internal WiFi adapter. In fact I find its performance comparable to the more expensive directional WiFi systems from H-Field and such.

My son's computer is now up and running after he had to do a factory reset. Nothing to do with this order but he is on line again, This receiver works great he is picking up signals from all over and can pick up places like the library without going there. It was great to see a smile back on his face. Now all I have to do is check my computer when I need his help. This is a great product I was surprised that it reaches out so far.

Amazing product.

This product is everything you want it to be, and then some. Easy to set up in Windows, and even easier to set up in Linux. Actually this has become my main wireless adapter for even my desktop PC and am considering buying at least 1 more of them (To achieve what I originally got it for, portability.. Ever since I hooked it up to my desktop, I don't want to take it with me for my laptop anymore...) This product blows everything else I've ever even tried to use out of the water. I see many, many more networks, and have a strong constant signal with one that I had issues with in the past. I ordered this one in early May and received it early on the first day of the "Estimated ship date", and it's still alive and kicking strong. The only slight downside I've seen so far is that the unit gets quite warm after constant use, but nothing too hot and it hasn't been off since May.

Advice from a cable guy

This amplifier is well made, durable and meets all of the requirements for professional use. It's is widely used in the cable industry (contrary to some of the reviews here). There are several companies that make these and they all meet the frequency requirements (5-1000 MHz) for modern HFC cable systems. It is provided and installed by cable guys and it costs $40-$50 on average.First of all this device should only be used for your TV service. Do NOT amplify the modem line. You need to use the splitter to split one line to the modem and the other should feed the amplifier and the rest of your outlets. This amplifier will increase your modem upstream return level. Read the print on the amplifier : RTN(return) -8 dBmV. Your upstream power level will increase and your modem will have to work harder to communicate out. Also it will sometimes decrease your upstream signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).The amplifier is not a do-it-all miracle device that will solve all of your problems. It simply amplifies the incoming signal. It does not filter the noise. This means your incoming signal needs to be clean and at acceptable level before the amplifier. So if you have 4 or more TVs (on average, but this may vary) you will most likely benefit from this purchase. If you have more than that you should buy the single port version (cheaper) and use an 8 way splitter. In fact if you buy a single port version and use a 4 way splitter you will get the same signal levels.However if you have problems I strongly recommend calling your local cable co and get a tech out. If you are a DIY person, make sure you do some research first and use quality equipment (like this amplifier), RG6 60% braid shielded or better cable (quad shield is better), compression fittings (like PPC, Thomas&Betts) and not crimp fittings (don't apply pressure on the coax), splitters that do not have glue on the back cover and are rated 5-1000 MHz. By investing more money and getting quality equipment it will help you have trouble-free service and will most likely save you some money in the long run.PS If you can get a power inserter (it looks like a regular splitter but it's not) you can use it to back feed the power on one line so you don't need to have a power outlet right next to the amplifier (make sure you connect it to the "REMOTE POWER" (sometimes "DC IN/RF OUT") port on the amplifier).

Works wonders for spotty cable reception

This is the 4-port version of the Motorola Signal Booster, combining that product's high-quality 15 dB cable/antenna drop amplifier with an integrated 4-port splitter so you can use this device with up to four TVs (or a cable modem and three TVs) without having to buy a separate high-bandwidth signal splitter.So who would benefit from a cable amplifier like this? Anyone who is having difficulty receiving a solid and reliable cable TV or cable modem signal is a candidate for the BDA-S4. But first check with your cable company to make sure they have done all they can to get a high quality cable feed into your home, with high quality cables, splitters and connectors. If they've "been there, done that," and you still notice frequent outages of your cable internet service, or pixilated (distorted) images on live or recorded TV shows from cable, then you may very well need a drop amp like this one.This four-output amplifier is particularly helpful if you are splitting a cable signal coming into your house to multiple rooms for multiple TV feeds (and this is perfectly legal to do, per the Cable Act of 1992). Whenever you split a cable signal, you lose approximately 3 dB (decibels) of signal strength. Split a signal enough times and it can cause you to lose your cable modem feed or get sporadic distortion on your digital cable channels. Insert a cable amplifier like this into your cable feed as close as possible to where it enters the home and it will boost the signal enough to survive multiple splits and, in most cases, will allow you to enjoy a glitch-free cable TV signal throughout your home as well as a solid high-speed internet connection.Why is this amp's "two-way" or "bi-directional" capability important? A two-way amp/splitter with "return" feed support is necessary in order to properly support a broadband cable modem (for data upload and download) and to enable interactive cable services such as PPV (pay per view) and interactive guides. A one-way amplifier will boost overall signal reception, but it will not work with a modem or interactive cable services. The BDA-S4 works perfectly with both.The BDA-S4 won't work miracles. Again, always check your incoming signal, cable and connector quality first. But if you've done all that and are still having trouble, this little cable signal amp can be a real life-saver. It also works fine for OTA (over the air) HDTV signal amplification but only if you have a decent signal to begin with. What a difference!

This dramatically improved the reception in my house. I have Insight Cable (Ohio) and have always had several snowy channels. The cable company had been out but said there was nothing they could do, as some channels just get poor reception. To make matters worse, I recently added five new splices for a total of 10. Several TV's had terrible reception. I chose this model so I could run the main cable input into the booster and then each output to a splitter. The main cable line enters the house into a finished office so I also liked how the unit was powered, too. It works absolutely fantastic. All TV's now have excellent reception. I just cannot believe that this solved my issues. It seems very well made and sturdy and it's actually pretty neat how it works. The power source is an inverter that translates the house electric to 12V. You plug it into your outlet and then run an R59 or R6 coaxial cable from the power source to the amplifier/booster. So I just fished a new cable line in the wall near my outlet to power it, as opposed to having to deal with installing a new outlet near my cable input. I have broadband internet coming through my cable and have seen no interference or problems with that. It was always pretty good so I'm unsure if there was any improvement. To me this was well worth the money. I have several LCD TV's around and it sucked to have spent the money on them but have bad reception.
